Exhaust Suggestions

Hello all,

I am new here, and new to the TL lifestyle in general. I am looking into getting an exhaust system and have had trouble pinning down what I want. First off I do not want my car to come out sounding like a teenage ricer-mobile. If I had wanted that I would have bought something closer to that way of life. This is my daily driver, which I drive to my job at the courthouse, so as you can see I don't want an overpoweringly loud exhaust.

What I am essentially looking for is a freer flowing exhaust that brings out the original exhaust to a little louder, semi-beefer note. I don't want to be setting off alarms in parking garages, just something that when it's at full song stands out. Any help would be appreciated in an facet.

Thanks in advance and look forward to talking shop with y'all.

well your options are the following...

XLR8 exhaust w/ resonator
ATLP exhaust w/ resonator
Comptech exhaust w/ resonator

there are other companies you can go with (greddy/rv6) but they are def not quiet. no matter what you do, make sure you get one with a resonator and don't change your catalytic converters or jpipe...because that's when the exhaust gets loud.

good luck.

Is there a cheaper route to take?? I would ultimately like to go with a full exhaust but money is tight right now ... What about a set of mufflers that will get the sound I want for now, with the ability to move up to a full exhaust later? I would also like something that would allow me to keep the stock tips ... I like the looks of the stockers in relation with the body

Again thanks in advance!

sounds like you want to do an exhaust stage mod. here is the thread, and it's a cheap way to make your exhaust tone different.

That is exactly what I am looking for! Thanks a ton for your help ... One last newb question on this topic - where might a good place be to get the angled straight pipe that replaces the mid-muffler??

Any muffler shop should have it in stock.

Don't do the stage mods. Not worth hacking up your exhaust. Go with a Jpipe and PCDs, they will make your stock exhaust sound beefier

Unless XLR8 used a MUCH bigger resonator on their v2, I'd steer clear of that. My v1 was ridiculously loud, actually got pulled over by a cop because of it. I'm thinking of going the ATLP route personally as the tips look very nice and just look like they belong on the car. Currently running a Tsudo setup (was cheap) and it passed inspection in Cali by 12db. But it is a temporary thing.

Explore your options at a muffler shop. Most should be able to set you up with something that isn't very expensive.

normally i'd agree with you...i hate stage mods just as much as the next guy, but i got the impression that OP didn't want to spend a lot of money.

tanabe is also a good choice for a semi-quiet exhaust...but again, the money thing gets in the way.

Unfortunately for the OP since we don't have a mass production parts car the demand to supply ratio makes the cost suffer. So in short if you want to make that kitten purrrrrrr, you gotta drop some dough

Yeah I am finding that out little by little ... I am moving over from a 2002 Camaro Z28 where everyone and their neighbor's dog has some sort of reproduced part for every little niche of the car so this is a little wake up call.

I think I am gonna go with removing the resonator and chopping up the exhaust pipe mainly because it gives me the flexibility later to add a cat-back once the funds get a little better. I appreciate everyone's help ... Nice to get quick responses here!

if you get a catback like we mentioned, it'll replace your entire exhaust after the jpipe. your hacked up exhaust will be taken off completely.

Yeah exactly ... That is the main reason I am probably gonna go the hacked up route to begin with!! It'll give me the sound I am looking to get for now, with the ability to chunk the whole thing later one ... Great advice and thanks a ton!

I'm not sure when you ordered your exhaust but we implemented Purge Resonance Technology into all our mufflers, which has significantly reduced drone as well as cut down on the exhaust note a bit. So, it is throaty at WOT but fairly civil while cruising. And just FYI the ATLP setup is generally louder than our XLR8 exhaust.

Yea, but you got to remember who is making the parts too. None of these guys are running a huge operation where they can just add the TL parts into another order assembly to drive the price down. Take J and R for example. They operate about an hour from where i live, and there shop is not that big... No dyno, no mandrel bender, no crazy welder. So a lot of there stuff they have to outsource which drives up the price with every guy you gota go to

The v2 is pretty loud but dunno how much more compaired to the v1. At low gears and around 2-4 rpm its pretty loud and sounds very nice especially the back fires but when it hits 5th gear cruising it's pretty quiet.

If performance really isnt what your looking for, just a little more masculine sound, why not just just got with removing the mid muffler? or the end mufflers, but those muffler a lot more sound than people would think. im that teenager with a complete custom exhaust setup. My car sounds louder than a Ferrari, but thats what i like.
