Cool 2014, or 2015?

Hi, I am looking to buy an MDX lease return certified Acura, but saw that the 2014 has a radically higher dissatisfaction rate than the 2015. Can anyone offer some tips to get the best 3rd gen for a reasonable price?

Thanks,
Rick

That is because the 2014 was the first year for A LOT of new Acura tech. Headlights, platform, engine, interior, dash...etc. They did a major overhaul of a lot of things so as expected the first year had a lot of issues.

The 2015 MDX hits a sweet spot in the 3G model, it fixed up a bunch of issues with the 2014 model year while still keeping the 6 speed automatic vs the (depending who you ask) mostly very negatively reviewed 9 speed auto. Be aware the MDX still uses a timing belt/waterpump and will need a valve adjustment at 100k miles which can be pricey if done at the dealer.

My advice for you is to get a 2015 with the lowest mileage you can afford. Make sure it was well taken care of and get a good inspection. The 3G is pretty electronic vs the older generations with a bunch of electronic systems that can cost an arm and a leg to fix. So also be prepared to invest in a extended warranty.

Its funny I went searching for CPO 2014/2015 to 2015/2016 to 2016 to just buying a new MDX 2017. My local CPO with 20-30k was only 2k cheaper than a new one.. i was like wtf, ill just buy new.

I think biggest jump is between 2015/2016. 2016 you get the new transmission.. would opt for that.. some preferred the 2015

You can see from the TSBs that the 2014 and 2015s are affected by a lot more issues than the 16+. The 16 has its share still, and the 17s really don't have much yet.

Also experience the same with used 15 vs new 16. New 16 was actually cheaper in the end.

You have to love when someone asks a question and never comes back to comment or thank people for their replies...etc.
