Aftermarket HU options?

Kape....I can't speak for the 2012's.....I have a 2011 and all the shrouds from 2009 through 2011 work for my car...I would suggest you do some additional research to verify...I just searched ebay using "tsx navigation display" and came up with the below hits....they're pretty good deals...it seems that prices are dropping.....Firebrand used a 2010 shroud which made her installation a bit easier as no routing was required but she mentioned in one of her posts that you can cut the acrylic piece so that just the left and right "wings" are left...this will cover up the resultant holes on either side....the 2009 shroud worked great for me but it was a lot of work...I think if you could cut the acrylic piece on a straight line using a fine tooth blade and a fence that would be a better bet....the stuff is 1/8" thick and tough as nails.

Thanks ArtJ. I think I was looking at eBay.ca. Also, on eBay.com the selection is limited to people that ship to Canada. I'll keep looking though.
Thanks for the info regarding the 2009 vs. 2010+.

mine is a 2012 and the 2010 I got fits perfect. I do recommend attempting to keep the plexiglass or whatever it is, since it will look better... That being said, I don't hate mine at all :-)

Its a touchscreen monitor rather than a tablet. Connected to a laptop. And yeah it's using BT so I can still use the wheel buttons for next song.

A tablet won't fit in that spot unless i were to totally dismantle it.. there are bezels on the sides.
To install it i took off the door for the storage thing and just fabricated a little bracket thing to hold it all in place.

I see ... it doesn't look bad at all, though how do you control the laptop? The screen is a touch screen? And the temperature swing isn't a problem for the computer? Inside the cabin it can get as hot as 40C in the summer, and -30C in the winter here in Canada...

Yes its a touchscreen. The laptop temperature isn't an issue since it dosen't run while the car is off and parked. I'm using a SSD so there are no moving parts also.

Hey icrap I really like that setup....can you give us some details on the connection to the laptop and what kind of functions you're using? Does the laptop have 4G? You got me thinking 😁

the laptop will automatically connect to my phone which shares it's 4G. I could easily add a 4G adapter directly to the laptop also if I really wanted to, but I think the internet sharing through the phone works just fine.
The functions i'll be using it for are mainly music and GPS. Also a few apps like pandora, google music, soundcloud, and well... really anything you can do on your computer you can do on this.
There is a built in windows 8 navigation app, which works fairly well... there is also google maps and microsoft maps. Still have to use them all to see what's the best.
I'll post full details on the install later once it's finished. There is an HDMI and USB cable going from the screen into the laptop, and that's' about it. Then I have a USB GPS receiver.... I am also considering adding a backup camera.

Very cool icrap....sounds like a great way to go...I'll bet you could hide that laptop "permanently" somewhere like behind a panel so you don't have to mess with taking it in and out of the car......if you go with a backup camera just avoid the 2.4GHz wireless models...I tried one in the wagon....as soon as the OEM bluetooth system wakes up it wipes out the video. Looking forward to seeing the finished product...thanks.

That's a great idea ... where did you get the 7" touch screen monitor?
I am thinking I can get a 7" monitor, and get some kind of an "Android USB stick" that has USB out, BT connectivity, and since it already has built in google navigation etc it will be an easy setup.
Only thing is if I'm playing music through it or using it as my GPS, the Acura's BT can only connect to 1 device at a time, and I lose the BT-link for handsfree with my own cell phone ... wouldn't you have the same problem icrap?

Yeah that's a good point. I think Android stick / small Android box is quite ideal because of its low power draw, built in BT, Wifi and GPS, and many available apps (navigation, media players) that are quite ideal for car-puter use. Biggest problem is it doesn't seem like there is any easy way to connect Android to an external touchscreen. If I don't go with a touch screen, and use a remote to control then screen then it does work, but that's kinda stupid, especially for navigation app.
I'll have to do some more digging.
BTW, attaching the 7" screen to that 'box' is easy? Just a couple of brackets on the side and removing the door cover and that's it?

I'll also look into this android option as honestly i'd prefer having Android to the PC.
Yeah it's very easy... take off the door cover and springs and I also trimmed a tiny bit off the bottom of the box. Fits nicely. I fit all the screens electronics inside the box thing behind it.

BTW is that center console 'box' a standard double DIN unit in itself? If so there would be a lot more options for mounting ...
Where do you put the laptop icrap?
I am thinking if I don't need touchscreen, and can deal with a remote + touchpad solution then I can easily do a 7" screen + Android stick / box solution. But obviously, touchpad would be so much better, but I'd rather Android than Windows.

Nope actually, our HFL and BT audio system are actually running separately. I have disabled call audio from the computer while still having it run on my phone... so, if i get a call it just switches right over to the phone audio.

Yep. You can have one on the HFL and one on the BT Audio.
The center box is not a standard double din btw, it does require a tiny bit of fitting.
After some reading i've found that the Android stick may be able to support the touchscreen, I've ordered one and will test when it arrives.

btw make sure you disable the MEDIA BT from your phone. it's very easy on an Android phone, unsure on iPhone.

One ebayer told me a capacitive version of the touchscreen is coming out in about a month and will easily work with Android. Till then, a lot of work has to be done to make the resistive screen work with Android ... think I'll wait a bit then.

oh well damn i should have waited for that...
#272
He said it can still work but is not plug and play ... and when he says "1-2 months" it can also take a lot longer too.
I was thinking even without the touchscreen it could work with a remote and touchpad as input ... and I would have gone for that too, but obviously, touchscreen is better.

Finally had some time to test the P-81ACRD I got from Amazon a few weeks ago. When I first plugged it in, the screen just displayed scrambled lines so I thought for sure I got a defective one. But I turned it off and back on again and everything seemed to work fine.
I tested the navigation, radio, HVAC, bluetooth, etc. One thing I couldn't figure out is how to set the time. There is the car time that's displayed under "Trip" but there's also the Ingenix time which is in the top-left corner of the home screen. If I click on the top drawer then clock, I can adjust the timezone and what looks like daylight savings, but not the actual time. Also, when I turn the car off and back on again, the time goes back to "PM 12:00". Anyone else have this problem? This time is what's used for the automatic brightness, and if it always resets to 12:00 then it's useless. My OS version is P81ACRD M1.20Z2
Overall, I wasn't too impressed to be honest. It's not very intuitive, but I guess I was expecting similar features to a tablet. If I compare it with the OEM screen, that only has navigation, so definitely the Ingenix unit is better. I didn't like that there are two clocks and two Bluetooths, the OEM one and the Ingenix one. It's confusing. I take it the Ingenix bluetooth uses the external speare and mike which sucks but you can at least see your contacts, dial from the unit not your phone, etc. I assume the same goes for streaming music through bluetooth? if you're connected to the Ingenix bluetooth then your music will play through the external speaker but you'll have a nice interface, song name, artist and so on, which you don't have through the OEM bluetooth.
Now all I need to do is find an OEM screen so I can install this thing.

It's easy to get the touch screen input to work with the Raspberry Pi? But Pi only runs XMBC, and doesn't really have navigation app does it?
