Are these custom made amber reflectors legal?
Painted my headlight housings black a while ago, and while I had my headlights apart I was dicking around and decided to cover my amber reflectors in black 3M reflective tape, but left a little bit of the amber reflector showing so that its not illegal. But the more I look at it the more I realize that there really isn't that much amber showing, and possibly not enough to please a cop...and plus, 90% of it is reflecting white so that might catch a cops attention.
I don't know, what do you guys think?

That's pretty smart although I think I would hae put the reflective tape all over the reflector. I think your drawing more attention to the fact that your covering it up. Where did you get the reflective tape from.

I saw this idea on a VW forum.
This is where I bought the reflective tape: http://www.ebay.com/itm/3M-Scotchlit...item2a2221006e

Amber side reflectors, smoked ?
Before I had actually taken the reflector out but a buddy of mine who is becoming a cop said that that is a big no no. but he said if I were to modify it leave some amber showing, but then again he didn't sound too sure.
I really wanted to cover the whole thing but I just have this weird fear that a cop is going to slap a huge fine in my face for something like "an inadequate reflector" or something.

Hey Carson, so your to be cop buddy said "no....no" , but ya went ahead anyways ! Bravo....yeah, these things are at the cop's judgement and mercy. But will it hold up locally ? Check with your authorities if in doubt and feel afraid of a huge fine. Only then will you know for sure.
I say to go with it and see what happens, many times it's just a slap warning.....no fines unless ya give the cop a reason to wanna do so.
