signs of a bad head gasket?

lately ive been having an issue of coolant being pushed out of the overflow tank and random overheating. it never consumes coolant just pushes it out of the overflow tank. temp never ran over 3/4. have brand new fans, cooling system is bled. the coolant smells like oil though. its not mixing at the dipstick. sometimes itll run perfect but most of the time itll fix the overflow tank til it over runs. tried brand new radiator cap. looking to see if i have any other options before i order arp studs and oem gaskets. are oem head gaskets good or is it better to get a cometic or something aftermarket?

The only thing I can think of checking is the thermostat. Not sure if a faulty one would cause an overflow of coolant though.

You mentioned that the coolant smells like oil, is there any observable sheen present when you look at it?

when i swapped the engine over the summer, i replaced the t-stat with a fail safe one. oem temp rating. i cant really seen any oil in it. however, the tube thats apart of the cap on overflow tank is covered in like oily shit. but i think thats just from 225k miles.

Sorry to hear.

Just an FYI, I did a search on car-part.com; 01-02MDX j35a3 for zip code 30308 and there are MANY to choose from $250-700 should you want to go that route.

yea already swapped to j35a3.

i ordered arp studs/oem gaskets and other trinkets from ad-eng. cleaned out the garage enough to stuff 2 cars in it so i can tear it down without having to worry about the bottom end getting ruined.
