Comptech Icebox Filter Alternative!

Took some pics and got some info for you guys who wish to use a much nicer and easier to clean K&N filter than the Comptech foam P.O.S.... but that is just my .02... if your happy with your foam than keep it...

A couple of weeks ago, Steve, Brad and myself did some brainstorming under the thread "Supercharger Thoughts"..

I got my filter today and did the swap...

K&N part number KN RU-2590---$33.97

P.S. the K&N filter cleaning kit is only $8.97, compared to Comptechs $13.00 dollar cleaning kit... and You can recharge your filter atleast 3 times with (1) K&N kit compared to 1 time with the C/T cleaning kit..

I placed my order through AJusa.com, since they have free shipping, accept paypal and have decent prices....

Enjoy..hope I helped a few out...

Smitty

P.S. Don't worry about that useless plastic pin ontop of the foam filter.. it does NOT line up in the I/B nor does it serve a purpose.

You know i was thinkin that there was probbaly a k&n that would fit, but didn't bother researchin the sizes. glad to see that someone took the time to.

i might just try that out cuz honestly i dont like the pos foam filter, i think that comptech could have done a better job ont eh filter. but they did say that the foam filter lasts longer but i dunno.

Good work Smitty.

I had to cut off the plastic piece at the top of the filter anyway as it didn't line up so I couldn't close the lid.

When I next change my oil I will be getting that K&N filter.

Once again, you guys rock!

That's a big fatty ground in the picture to the left.
One picture has the ring retainer in the ice box, the other does not. Which way did you leave it?

That might have been me but I thought somebody else was going to try it. You're right I am a Fargin' slacker! Has anyone seen the windo weld stuff anywhere? On the site that shows how to do it it says it's available in most parts stores but I haven't been able to find it. I know I know I haven't looked very hard either. I'm ready to do it. I just need a weekend where I have enought time for it to cure. I'm going to do just the motor mounts and see how that goes then I'll try the radius rod bushings. I'll see if I can locate the windo weld this weekend and hopefully I can do it next week. Don't know if I can put it in this weekend though as I have to go to 2 weddings. Double turds!!!

I was told by CT you can get several cleanings out of the UNIKit .. i just cleaned mine and I still have plenty left for more cleanings.. how much oil are you guys spraying the foam filter with??

Is the K&N alternative simply for easier time cleaning the filter? Or do you actually think you'll see something..

When I got my S/C, it stated in the directions to use the whole can of oil on the filter.... Yes, I purchased it for easier cleaning...I just hate that cheesy P.O.S. foam crap.. You will not see any gains... I did not notice any differencce in sound either.... But I did not smash the gas pedal yet, since it is pouring down rain....

Now we have an alternative.

That brings up another question for you hardcore gearheads.

Does anyone know what the airflow variances are coming in to the frontend.

Let's say just below the lower lip of the front airdam?

Just for drag race events I was wanting to toy with a cowl induction or ramair type set up.

This would be for those of us with iceboxes.

For $33, I might just pitch it every 20K. I hate the cleaning and oiling. I havn't cleaned/oiled a K&N yet, so I'll try it once and we'll see.

Another question, this one a quicky.

Looks like the K&N is open inside vs the CT that is solid foam. Yes?

Take out your dumbie fog light bezel or driving light and you will have the RAM-air affect.

if I remember correctly, it's pleated inside the metal mesh, with the 1/2" foam cover

Looked at that, but I think the opening on the 2002s is too small to bother with.

I'm thinking of droping the intake tube below the liner and putting a wide angle collar behind it.

I just don't know about the airflow below the airdam. It could have low points and have a negative effect at higher speeds.

Dooh, I should have looked at the 2nd pic more clearly. :o

Humm, that helps add to my thought. For 1/4 mile events a lot of guys open up the airway completely. As long as the track isn't dirty or dusty conditions, you could mod the K&N by removing the solid piece thereby letting the air just rush in . . . a real ramair.

If there is any concern, you could put a very light weight mesh covering over it to keep out larger particles.

nah, alot of research and design goes into how the air flows in the filter and keeps it from forming a Vortex... so I trust the K&N design... as for the Foam P.O.S. I just was not happy with it..nor did I feel safe with it.... When they tell you to clean a filter every 3000 miles or every oil change, it makes me a tad bit nervous..

From my experience cleaning other K&N filters, & the Comptech 1, I think it's easier to clean the Comptech. Also that little tab does line up in my airbox.

Good info though if I want to replace the filter at some point.

Damn, beat me to it.

I got mine in earlier this week but haven't got around to installing it; probably will tonight though.

One other thing I was looking at is finding a way to route air into the top to even out the how it is getting dirty. Maybe a new hood with a large scoop. :o

you know, i thought of going to a molding shop and having them custom make a plastic piece that would fit in the same spot as where the fog lights are, but in the 03's there is that black piece and having it flow air into the bottom pipe of the CAI this would be more direct and allow greater airflow.

what do you guys think? others have said to simply cut the black piece that is on the car, but wouldn't a shaped tube that directed air into the pipe be more beneficial? of course i wouldnt' recommend doing this in the winter time.
