yes you should get centering rings (the company you bought the wheels from didn't provide them?), and yes you can use any ring that's the right size

Will 235-40-18 fit on a 18-7.5" wheel?

Which tyre?
Check the manu's online site and info/specs should be there, which will include recommendations for rim widths suitable for running said tyre.

I know the TSX with it's standard suspension is lovingly referred to as '4x4 look', but instead of putting 22's on it, the conventional wisdom is to lower the suspension.
You want to make it sporty looking, not fulfil the SUV desire - that's what the RDX is there for!

Will a 19x8.5 with 35mm offset stick out past the fender? I'm dropped on H-techs.

Depends on the tyre being mated to the wheel - will it have rim protection?
I believe 8.5 with 35 is right on the margin (if not over) - 38-42 being optimal, although inner/arm rubbing is potentially an issue.
Personally I'd be erring towards 19x8 with 42/45.

It's going to be a 235/35/R19 tire. I was lookin at the Axis Milano's. The only size they offer is 19x8.5 with a 35mm offset so I don't know.

Will rolling the fenders help in this situation with rubbing?

Hi.

I have a 2006 TSX and need to pick a set of winter wheels. I have a set of 205/55R16's from my old Audi A4 which I am desperatly hoping to re-use. They are mounted on 16" Steel rims.

Using the tire calculators the difference between the 205/55R16 and the OEM 215/50R17 is only 2.374% - within the acceptable range as shown in the first chart of this thread.

Am I missing something here? Assuming the bolt pattern matches, will these wheels fit on my TSX?

Thanks for your help.

Grevs.

I believe they use a 5x112mm bolt pattern, which won't work on the TSX.

re-use the tires?

Presumably the Rims are cheaper than the rubber.

If I could get 16" steel rims for these tires - am I in good shape?

Thanks

Help for Newbie

Hi Guys,

I read through all 6 pages of this post, and my head is spinning. I really don't know anything about tires, and now I am just completely confused. I'm hoping someone can give me a simple answer.

I have a 2006 TSX, with the stock rims and tires. Other than the rims being 17" (I think?), I do not know any of the other specs. I would like to put 18" rims on the car, and would just like to know what the best rim/tire combo specs would be. I didn't want to have to make any other modifications to the car (brakes, suspension, etc.) right now to make the tires fit, and I definitely don't want to have any rubbing or to affect the handling of the car.

Am I asking too much? I thought this would be a simple thing to do, but after reading everying in this post, I guess it isn't. I was originally going to get some 18" A-Spec rims and slap them on, but now I'm not sure if that will work.

Thanks for the help and Happy Thanksgiving!

Tony

This part didn't help?

Tire Size:
Here is a good assortment of tire sizes for everything from 16" winter wheels to 20":
Specification ..Sidewall ..Radius ..Diameter ..Circumference ..Revs/Mile ..Difference
215/50-17 .....4.2in .......12.7in ....25.5in ......80.0in ..............792 ..........0.0% **OEM**
205/60-16 .....4.8in .......12.8in ....25.7in ......80.7in ..............785 ..........0.9%
215/60-16 .....5.1in .......13.1in ....26.2in ......82.2in ..............771 ..........2.7%
225/50-16 .....4.4in .......12.4in ....24.9in ......78.1in ..............811 ..........-2.4%
205/50-17 .....4.0in .......12.5in ....25.1in ......78.8in ..............804 ..........-1.5%
215/45-17 .....3.8in .......12.3in ....24.6in ......77.3in ..............819 ..........-3.3%
225/45-17 .....4.0in .......12.5in ....25.0in ......78.5in ..............808 ..........-1.9%
225/50-17 .....4.4in .......12.9in ....25.9in ......81.2in ..............780 ..........1.5%
235/45-17 .....4.2in .......12.7in ....25.3in ......79.6in ..............796 ..........-0.5%
215/40-18 .....3.4in .......12.4in ....24.8in ......77.8in ..............814 ..........-2.7%
215/45-18 .....3.8in .......12.8in ....25.6in ......80.5in ..............787 ..........0.6%
225/40-18 .....3.5in .......12.5in ....25.1in ......78.8in ..............804 ..........-1.5%
225/45-18 .....4.0in .......13.0in ....26.0in ......81.6in ..............777 ..........2.0%
235/40-18 .....3.7in .......12.7in ....25.4in ......79.8in ..............794 ..........-0.2%
215/40-19 .....3.4in .......12.9in ....25.8in ......81.0in ..............783 ..........1.2%
215/35-19 .....3.0in .......12.5in ....24.9in ......78.3in ..............809 ..........-2.1%
225/35-19 .....3.1in .......12.6in ....25.2in ......79.2in ..............800 ..........-1.0%
235/35-19 .....3.2in .......12.7in ....25.5in ......80.0in ..............792 ..........0.0%
215/35-20 .....3.0in .......13.0in ....25.9in ......81.4in ..............778 ..........1.8%
225/35-20 .....3.1in .......13.1in ....26.2in ......82.3in ..............770 ..........2.9%
235/35-20 .....3.2in .......13.2in ....26.5in ......83.2in ..............762 ..........4.0%

Anything bigger than a +/-2% difference is considered a mismatch and should be avoided if possible. Speedometer, odometer, and VSA/ABS systems can be affected by mismatched tire sizes.

To be honest Dom, the chart kind of confused me. And I wasn't sure if the sizes it mentioned could just be slapped as is or if I had to make any adjustments.

Thanks for the help Xizor!

One thing I want to add is to verify the "actual tire spec" of the tire you are getting instead of just going by the numbers written on the sidewall. If you pick 5 brands of tires in the exact advertised size, all those tires can have different "actual sizes" in sectional width, tread width and overall height. It may not matter much until you decided to lower the car. TireRack is a good place for those info as well as the tire company web site.

Sticking with my original premise of just being able to "slap the tires on" with no other modifications, do I need to worry about the offset?

Thanks again!

I just pulled a few tires off TireRack for a quick comparison. These are the exact same advertised size (225/40/18). Note how the tread width and overall height can be different, even from the same manufacture? We are looking at up to .6" difference in height and over 1" in tread width and we are only sampling 3 tires. The tire size plus wheel offset and lowering can cause fitment issues if not careful.

^^ I should also mention that the specs for "Revs per mile" in the original list in the first post are based on theoretical numbers. The actual revs per mile for our 215/50/17 HX MXM4's is 819, not 792 as shown in the list.

I'm so confused. I really thought I'd be able to buy 18" A-Spec rims, with a certain tire size, and not have to worry about anything. Am I better off just getting 17" A-Spec rims and using the tires that came with my car?

What are you confused about?
Your standard 17" has a rolling circumference of 80".
Use the chart above to find similar ones either slightly over or slightly under.
Best one is 235/40/18 which is 0.2% under, meaning 60 mph is actually 60-0.2%. And that's not the speedo reading as it'll be reading 2-3 mph fast (to help you save yourself from fines/prosecution for speeding).
So, get the 18" A-Specs if that's what you prefer - you know which size of tyre you'll need to get to go on them.

Thanks!

Any reason NOT to get 18" wheels? Do they negatively impact the car in any way? I like the look of the bigger tire, but not enough to sacrifice performance.

Thanks PJS.

I think I'm starting to understand everything. According to the chart, the 235/40/18's have the closest specs to my original equipment. Looking at the 2006 TSX tire options, 225/40/18's are listed as optional, but 235's are not, even though they seem to match most closely to the stock tire specs. Is there a reason for this? Is there a reason I should not get the 235's? I'm just concerned they may be too wide and cause rubbing, or that the sidewall aspect ratio may be too small.

a smaller sidewall can cause a harsher ride (less cushion), and wheels with lower offsets can change steering feel (some)

Does anybody know if 19x8.5 with a +51 offset have any issues on the strut side? I know they will fit but I don't know if the rim will touch the strut?

shouldn't have a problem on the inside, no one has ever had a wheel that didn't have enough clearance

i tried out that tire calculator and the wheels and tires i were looking at were 18x8 +40 offset 225/40/18

on the calculator it stated "...The outside edge of the wheel will EXTEND an extra 28mm"

would this extend 28mm passed the fender?

would this be viable or would it look just plain ugly?

Not 100% sure, but I think it would be just flush, if not a bit past.
Easiest way to find out for sure is to take a ruler/tape out to the car and see for yourself.

2" is fine on the TSX, but at that point, the rear camber may be out and you may also need to budget for a set of adjusters fitted to correct it.

you may rub, I had a similar setup and rubbed now and then, 18x7.5 +42 225/40/18. I'd say there's a minimal chance of rubbing, but it could be fixed by moving the fender inside the wheel well etc. it'll definately look great though

I've got a 19x8.5" rims on the car with 235/35/19 tires. Would the wheels rub if I drop the car 1.5"?
