2006 Acura TSX black screen on nav unit

I just got this car and, well the nav screen is black. Everything works fine. At most the steering wheel feels hard. But the main problem is the navigation unit. The screen turns on but is blank. Just lit and black. Radio works. Voice command works. I took it to the dealership and they told me to change the whole navigation unit. With a cost of 5600. . more than the car is worth. Is this an issue with the whole nav unit ?(where the screen is) or is it only the DVD drive on the trunk ? How do I know which one I have to change ? I'm gonna have to buy used parts to fix it but I don't know how to test it. Is there a way to make the screen turns on without the nav unit? So I can control the AC and radio there ?

Most frequent cause for this is faulty dvd drive. It can be repaired (Alpine) or replaced (used ebay).

For diagnostics get a manual from automanualsource.com for $22.

good luck

So, will the manual help me identify the problem before I take action? I mean on the dealership they told me to replace all the unit, evne the dashboard with the screen. Is there a way to know if it is the dvd drive or the whole unit? i know that the screen turns on, backlight on , just black screen.

Hello, long time huh? Finally out of semester so I can work on my car. Quick question is, is there any way to do a system check with a combination of buttons ? as to make a self diagnostic ? WIll this work with a not working dvd drive? the dvd drive is able to eject the disk, and all that btw . which is weird. Is there a way to check if any cable is loose ?

Also , when removing the dvd rom, do i have to unplug the battery?

Not necessary to remove battery cable if you unplug dvd.

No experience w/ self test. See posted diagnostic.

good luck

So to remove the dvd rom, I only need to plug out the cables, and remove the 4 screws holding it in place in the trunk? Those 4 screws wont give up. So im at lost there.

Try accessing w/ small vise-grips, tap side w/ chisel, grind screw heads off w/ dremel are some potential solutions.

good luck
