No one knows what's so offensive about this thread. It could have been dabuda's picture with the girls and comments made by other members...

If you don't want someone offended, you have to indicate what was objectionable; otherwise, we have no idea what you don't want us to do.

About the password-protected stuff: I don't know if most people are aware of it, but at various times our site has gone back and forth between:

(1) Being able to read the forums without being registered, and
(2) Not being able to read the forums without being registered.

It seemed chaotic to me, and it was one of the first things that made me slightly uneasy about how things were being run. I assumed that either it was some known technique for getting people to register, or the PTB's wanted to see which way would get more members. Anyway, whichever way it is now (and I think indeed currently it's NOT "password-protected"), we have no way of knowing if it'll stay that way.

Regardless, I think Dom was right: You just shouldn't put anything on here that you're not comfortable with the whole world seeing.

Everyone must be bored tonight ....

1) This is not a porno site ... I don't see any of that on this thread which is nice for the family feel of a-tsx.com

2) Larch - no idea on the registered thing, but it was used to help control "priority" to registered folks when bandwidth and server resources were tight during the infamous TL info leak on a-tsx.com.

So it's all good .... and no I am not posting a picture of myself ... I am married with kids so what's the point :P

Edit: Changed title of this thread .... I think most people had no idea what this thread was about.

I don't think that was it, Provench. That could explain it if it was the other way just during that period of time, but I don't think it was. I'm pretty sure it changed back and forth a few times.

Good move changing the title of the thread. You're right -- nobody could have had any idea what this was about.
Even after I knew, I kept forgetting wtf this "I'm just curious" thread was about.

unless I am wrong, there really isn't a debate here--we got into this whole conversation because I had just given my thoughts regarding Stokeless' questions as to one of the reasons why no women have probably posted pics here, i.e., some of us might not feel comfortable bringing that type of attention to ourselves. that's all, really.

i would post a pic of myself if there was some other reason, or maybe in a different context--such as Halloween costumes or the tattoos, where the focus isn't really on what you look like but something else. in most car forums, the majority of the members are male, and so when a woman posts a picture just to post a picture, she kind of opens herself up to all sorts of attention, good and bad, which can be a little uncomfortable.

regarding wanting answers as to why schalliol didn't provide more specifics on the warning...i haven't the faintest clue.

This whole "offensive" issue is one that boggles my already boggled mind.

I just scoured that thread with utmost attention to the images, the grammar and whatever else was the culprit.

My findings...

I can't find a thing since the whole victim culture inspired feeling of being offended NEVER exists in my mentallity. To take offense to something is so wah, wah. Forgive me for my hardcore stance, but of all things, I expect the bloody internet to be %80 full of seemingly offensive material, people, and ideas. It's often the gutter of humanity, a coming together of all the world's kuckleheads.

1. People
I took that whole sticks and stones thing to heart when I was a mere child, so people calling me this or that will do nothing more than humour me. One idiots' verbal attack on you is nothing more than an expression of his/her opinion. It hurts and is offensive, if before, you valued them and their opinion. But to let some loser get to you from an unidentified, safe and cozy location where his actions will never be punished, is absurd to me. All they want is a reaction equal to their behavoir. That is what keeps them going. It's all so fun! When you get 'em with some humour, or some knowledge, their gameplan goes astray. Ignoring them is the utmost counterstrike, although almost impossible to do.

2. Images(non-porn)
All right. I'll concede that maybe there's still some pictures out there that might surprise people. Or maybe they've been more sheltered than the rest of us(?) I dunno. All I can say is that, since 9/11, nothing will ever surprise me again. Nothing. I learn more and feel more when I see the graphic photos of casualties of war and the like. The harsh reality of our world is too often glossed over so we don't offend anyone. Just what the hell are we hiding from? The truth that may jolt us from our cozy night in front of the TV, where we now see images of glorified violence and so-called offensive behavoir on a frequent basis. Pictures tell the story of life, a story that no author can re-create.

3. Images(porn)
Get over it already. It here to stay, and, like the world's oldest profession, always will be. There's never been any I've seen on here anyway. The censors would be lightning quick if such things appeared. Thank goodness.

4. Ideas...
Free speech reigns supreme baby. Nuff said!

In conclusion, I've just realised that "being offended" is merely a reaction to seeing or hearing something that one doesn't like seeing or hearing. One knows full well it exists, but instead of accepting and tolerating the fact that everybody's differnet and such offensive behavoir will live forever, one claims injury in an attempt to make it go away. It will never go away, nor will the types who excel in being real assholes(offensive?).

Hell, if something REALLY offends you, commit to doing something about it. I mean COMMIT. Time, effort, resources, whatever it takes to make you feel OK again. It's exactly what I tell people who hate their jobs. They bitch and moan and go on about this and that...QUIT!!! Or shut the hell up and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!! If the walls are to steep to climb, maybe it's time to reflect and concede defeat. Time for change, for a new beginning maybe. Save yourself. Work can kill. Negativity can kill. Complaining and bitching does nothing but buy you some time until the next offensive missile pierces your bubble and your world is once again turned upside down as you struggle to comprehend how the world can be so cruel.

If I've offended anyone, please accept or conclude that I'm nuts, completely bonkers. I'm from Canada and apparently there's something in the water up here. I know nothing of your upbringing or the hardships you've faced throughout your life. I am in no position to understand the magnitude of the damage that reality does to you, and therefore am in no position to be standing on my soap box, showering you with theories that only a nut could conceive.

maybe it is gsclifton's mounting of a scope AND a bipod on his AR-15. The 30-round clip may also have ruffled some feathers.

The controversy is just that the guys who posted pics are making the rest of us look bad. No, not because the pics are offensive... you're just too ugly!

This is probably why the car photo threads are much more popular.

Soze, your on a roll....

BTW, if I had to guess what was offensive in this thread it would have to be dabuda's pic of the coconut covered women, maybe people don't like breast's but leave it at that. I think we're all mature enough to know what to and what not to post.

I'd agree. While I don't find it offensive at all, there's always a whiner. Besides, you could see a similar coconut pic in a travel agency's brochure. Hm.... or maybe it was dabuda who offended.

Get over it whiners.. And Schalliol - please post what they claimed to be offended by.

Actually - reporting posts should and will be anonymous ... let's just drop it.

I respect the rights of folks to complain, but nothing in this entire thread is offensive enough to say .... lock the thread (note it is still open).

So ... let's get back to posting member pics or no more free postwhoring

Agreed. That's why I just wanted to note that we keep it clean, and wasn't going to post the reference or message reported. Additionally, I didn't want to lock the thread (or delete it).

so....here's a particularly stupid looking mug shot of me:

Dropping it is fine, but Prov, it looks like you misunderstood what he meant.

OF COURSE the reporting should be anonymous, nobody was indicating otherwise. But isn't it just common sense that if a mod or admin tells us to "cut it out," it should be made clear what he's talking about? I'm reasonably sure that all IDX meant was, WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM? He didn't say anything about identifying the complainer.

Actually, I think it's pretty clear that the warning was just an overreaction and that everybody probably regrets it, and that we can forget about it. But saying that "reporting posts should and will be anonymous" is off the mark.

Yep. That basically what I PM'ed to provench. Anonymous isn't the issue. Its making a public statement regarding content in the thread as a "precaution" or "warning", but not telling us what could possibly be objectionable (unless this was done via PM to the poster) and thus causing the last 3 pages of "wtf is objectionable?" posts. Kind of useless to point out an issue, but not specify why its an issue.

Ok, ok, but I don't want any more posts in this thread about this. If there are, I'll just lock it. The thread is waay off topic. PM me if you want to talk about it or start a post in the comments & suggestions forum.

The person who posted seemed to be addressing a post that had no on-topic content whatsoever and was "making fun" of another poster. I think that's the main issue. I probably should rather have indicated that people should stay on topic, which would cause no more like that to be posted.

note: the person who reported doesn't appear to have made a post in the thread, so don't just go looking for who was made fun of, it won't help you find the person

Schally and Prov -- A lot of the problem is the harshness with which you approached us in some of the posts here. It's not huge, but it's distinct. And Schally, that fury in your last post up there is hard to understand. Remember, the reason people were asking stuff and saying stuff is that you hadn't made the problem clear, stuff which should have been made clear. You made a little mess (which is fine, we all do it), then got mad at us for walking into it. Don't get mad at people for asking reasonable questions, and don't get mad at them when the problem isn't of their making.
