DIY: Rear Suspension

DIY: Rear Suspension

Tools Needed
1.17mm wrench
2.Spring Compressor Rent at Autozone or Buy it
3.15/16 Socket (22mm)
4.14mm Socket or a Rachet
5.Allen Metric (5)
6.10 mm socket(remove seats)

1. Rear Seat Removal, your rear seat is holding 4 Screws using a 10mm socket you need a extension. 2 in the corner and 2 in the middle. (sorry no pic) but D/L the Service Manual.

2. Losen the Hat nut on top of the shock (1) with the allen (5)(better off losen it first, i did the hard way.just about 3 turn is good. all the way that shit will kill you. Now remove the #2 nuts so you can remove shock.

3.Now lets spray on Liquid wrench just to losen up the nut wait about 5 min and then remove the 17mm nut on the bottom of the shock.(disregard the calipers i had to do my break pads)

4. Now you going to push the shock away from you so it can be freely, you can push down the rotor to take that off.

5. It Probaly recommanded to move your break line so you can move the shock out. i found a easy way..i was thinking just like screw,so basically the spring will act like a screw so i unscrew it and it came out easy and goes the same way goin back in.

6.Compress your stock springs till the Hat is lose then grab your 14mm Rachet(better) and your Allen size 5 your goin to remove the nut

7.Get your lowering spring and put it on your shocks. Compress the spring first ,then put your hat in make sure everything fits right.then tight up your top nut, and then losen your spring

8. go ahead and put it back. like a screw.make sure it like this picture otherwise you have a hardtime

9. if your hat doesnt fit in the hole you can just compress the springs, and it will fit snuggly in the hole, tight up the hat nuts, decompress the springs and tight up the 17mm nut.

It wasnt 2 finger it was 1 1/2

I did the best i can. for this write up. i never did a DIY ever..anything missing add it on or wrong.

My work would be the opposite way, I have rubbing and I need to stiffen the springs....or else, use spacers, or else fender roll....

OK... cuz that's where I'm stuck right now.

I got the damn thing in at the top, but getting that fucking bottom screw in is a total bitch. Wasted like an hour just fucking with it.

So what exactly did you do with the flat head driver to get it in there?

what bout wen you break in your springs..? isnt it goin to get a little lower..? beacues we did that to my friends 96 celica. we put KYB struts and tien springs and it was lookin nice at fist but after a while the back got more lower than tha front. do u think coilovers would be better..? For the TL..? i want to get coilovers just beacuse i want my car to be low but i dont want it to get too low. also i got a big stereo system in my TL

nope it been 3,000 + its still the same height

these are titanium springs that eventually compress back to the same way it was..these are not like other spring that lower it self when u drive + miles

aftermarket strut will just add another inch drop + springs drop add that together it will be more than a 3inch drop

i use to have a system but its hauling to much load.

get your self eibach springs.

Well it took me a while, but I was able to change out the rear struts and springs.

I used KYB Gr2 struts, and some lowering springs a friend sold me for hella cheap. They are made in Canada by one Canuck Motorsports. They have a drop of 2.5", which is a little more than the drop I had before. Basically some ebay specials. I would have used better parts, but am short for cash. I definitely needed to replace the suspension in my ride tho, because it's at 230,000 miles, and that suspension was seriously ruining my game.

I did the passenger side first, and this seriously took me like 8 hours to do. I am definitely not the best mechanic, and at every juncture something seemed to take a lot longer than anticipated. Two things I did that really helped was to remove the emergency brake line from the calipers. I struggled for like an hour to remove the old strut, until I decided to take that off, and then it came out way eaiser. I also ended up taking off the top part of the strut before I got the spring/strut out form it's spot. That made it easier to get out because that large top was getting caught.

The second side only took an hour and a half, and was a lot easier after I did those two things right away.

I am really happy with the way the car rides now. Definitely lower in the rear than before, I think the previous owner had like a 1.5 drop before. The old struts where both leaking tho, so now the ride is way improved. I'm not looking for miracles from the parts I put in, but just being able to go over bumps without the whole back shaking is off the hook!!

Thanks for the DIY homie, you saved me like $300 on shop fees. Plus it was pretty fun all said and done.

Damn! I have already replaced the axles and the starter in the last 30,000 miles lol. Both needed to get done tho.

I'll do the fronts when I have time. I've heard the 2.5 is tougher than the 3.2 tho... that sounds rough lol.

That's the truth! I did the fronts first, and I honestly lost count of the hours spent outside in the cold doing them. Both rears took less time than one front, especially the driver side front!
