Just one more question??

Thanks guys for the info. I really appreciate it. I guess I am just a bit confused on how to get to the EGR manifold? It looks like the EGR valve is actually connected to the intake manifold and it is all one piece. Does anyone have a diagram for the 2.2? Or when I take the EGR valve off do I just need to clean down in the ports it is connected to? If so what should I use to clean it? I appreciate you guys!!

Thanks
John

I would suggest purchasing a manual for your CL to assist in your repair. Cheap insurance against making a mistake.

EGR is rarely the problem. It's the EGR ports and EGR manifold which bolts down over the ports. EG passages from EGR valve to EGR manifold are built into the intake manifold.

good luck

Thumbs up Huge Thanks!!

Texas Honda & all that helped!! You are my saviour. I removed my EGR manifold and every port was completely blocked with carbon. We poked and proded and cleaned out completely and my car has never run so smoothe since I bought it!! I even reinstalled the old EGR valve and it works just fine. So now I am going to take it back. I am telling you guys that I never knew that those ports being blocked would cause a car to miss like it did. So once again thanks so much and I love this forum. This is the best ever!!

My CHK Engine light came on last night and I took it to my garage this morning. They checked the codes and its the EGR Flow code P0401

They said there's a factory recall for this problem and to take it to the dealer that the car may still be in the window of 8 years/80k.
It's under the 80k mileage but the sevice rep says that the 8 years was up in Sept 06. ARGH!!!!!! What timing, just wonderful!

They(Dealer) wants $395 to clean port and replace EGR
My shop said they can clean port only for $150 or replace all for $350

Anderson - Click this link:

http://www.98exl.com/tsb/CG/99-085%2...20Clogging.pdf

and give it a try yourself. Its really not that hard. Do not worry about the special drill bit or the insert. I belive a 8mm drill bit does the trick - not exactly sure of the number, just use whats closest to the size of the EGR port in the intake manifold.

Yeah, i tried to get the bolts off to take the EGR out to clean. Got the front one off no problem. But stripped the back one... Now i'm screwed.. Literally. Any ideas on how to get that bitch off? Anyone try that gator grip thing? Can you put a good amount of pressure on that socket?

Get a set of "wobbly extensions" and a set of craftsman rounded bolt/nut remover. The wobblies allow a socket to engage the nut correctly and the special sockets will grip a rounded nut. They really work well.

good luck

Here's an update on the Acura Emissions Warranty Extension.

The following is extracted from a letter from Acura HQ in Torrence CA, dated Winter 2006-2007, titled Emissions Warranty Extension Reminder.

- Models covered are some 1995, 1996 & 1997 vehicles.

- For these vehicles, Federal and CA Emissions Warranties have been extended to 14 years from the date of original sale, or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first.

- If your vehicle fails a state emissions test, or if the CEL comes on, take your vehicle to an Acura dealer.

- Under this warranty, the dealer will repair any emissions-related problem free of charge.

- If you have paid for parts or repairs you believe should have been eligible for coverage under this warranty extension, please submit copies of the repair orders and any supporting documentation to

American Honda Motor Co
Acura Client Services
PO Box 2964
Torrance, CA 90509-2964
800 382 2238

I had this problem with my 138,000 mile 1997. When I read on this thread that there might have been some kind of warranty, I checked with the local dealer. They confirmed the warranty, and offered to see the car immediately, but made it very clear that THE CEL LIGHT MUST BE ON for the car to be accepted for this emissions warranty.

There is a standard procedure and a parts kit for the EGR problem which includes removing the manifold, cleaning and modifying the EGR ports with the addition of an EGR pipe, and replacing the EGR valve. All free, and they threw in a loaner car for the day. Nice deal all round!

Hope this help some other owners!

ZeroCL - First step is to call Acura Client Services on 800 382 2238

AznX TL - The letter from Acura says, "Models covered are some 1995, 1996 & 1997 vehicles." The rumor that only 97s are covered is wrong.

Thumbs up 97 CL CEL service

I bought a 97 CL 2.2 privately six months ago (120,000 miles), and was happy enough until the CEL light came on twice. First for O2 sensor and EGR, so I replaced the sensor and waited to see what would happen. The CEL light came back on a month later. After reading posts here, I made an appointment with Acura of Dayton (Ohio) to have it looked at. And the same day got a letter in the mail from Acura in Torrence CA about the extended emissions warranty!

The car was covered under Service Bulliten 98-031 for fault code P0401. They replaced the EGR valve and cleaned out all the carbon in the ports and manifold. They also said a tune-up is included with this S/B, so I got new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and a free oil change (was due for one anyway!). And they washed and vacuumed my car, too! Am I hapy? YOU BET! Now I have to contact Acura, as the letter I got states that if I have made any emissions related repairs recently, I may be entitled to a refund of my cost. Not sure if the O2 sensor is covered, but it can't hurt to check.

Too bad the A/C isn't part of this warranty...

I don't know what's up with all this emissions crap, but they've already replaced my cat plus all the included tune-up stuff.
about a week later, it started throwing the same code, i cleared it, it came back, i cleared it again, and it was gone for good.
now it has come on again.. i dont know what the hell could still be wrong, and last time i talked to Acura, they didn't seem to believe me.
Still, I'm taking it back this week probably and seeing what's up.
Do they have to give me a loaner if I request one, or is that just Acura being nice to you sometimes?
Because I really can't go a day without a car, so it's always a bitch getting it serviced.

So let me get this right. If my rattlebox cl pops a CEL for an EGR, I can take it to acura and they will fix it for me for free under that extended warranty thingy? Crap, I just had my stripped bolt busted off at my friends Nissan stealership....

I can only tell you what I know, and that would only include the 97's. I also didn't ask for a loaner car. I went in thinking it would take an hour or so, and then when they told me the deal included a free tune up and oil change, I was so happy that I didn't even think about asking for a loaner. I just walked up the street and wasted the time window shopping.

What surprises me is how much more responsive the engine is with the tune up and all. It's like someone added another cylinder to the engine. Woo-hoo! I'm guessing the plug wires, being 10 years old, were not at their best. Whatever it is, I'm happy about the new power.

Mine actually took two visits. I waited on the first visit, which was when they did the EGR system rebuild. The next day, it threw another CEL this time with an EGR Valve code.
The dealer took it straight in, and gave me a nice new loaner for the day. Turns out is was a badly terminated cable during the previous day's work. Oh well.......

Its less than stellar that the CL has this persistent emissions system issue, but Acura is certainly standing behind the car and providing great service. I was all set to do the EGR ports and replace the EGR valve, but this was a much better route!

The letter I got from Acura about this says that "If your vehicle fails a state Smog Check or the amber Check engine light comes on..." you should take your car to the dealer. Not sure about your situation, but a phone call wouldn't hurt.

Make the call, and have your VIN handy. They will tell you if your car is covered by the extended emissions warranty. Even if it is, note that the dealerships require one of two things for the car to be accepted for repair under the warranty:

- An active CEL. Codes don't mean anything unless they have caused the CEL to go on. Many codes can be set one trip and reset the next without ever setting the CEL.

- A failed smog/emissions check. Many states run a readiness check as the first step in emissions testing. This test reads the status of the OBDII monitors, which all should be clear and ready. If not, they will give you a print of the report showing which monitors were not ready. This print will get you qualified for warranty as a failed emissions test.

If your not covered and feeling as lazy as the people above, check my posts a few pages back for a how to. Its actually almost easier then letting the dealer do it.

The standard EGR update takes a couple hours max. If they have it booked in to do today, you should be good.

FWIW, when I had the first CEL and read the code, I replaced the EGR. It made no difference at all.

The dealer kit replaces the EGR valve and actually modifies the EGR port by installing a new EGR pipe. Not sure on the details, but that's what they do.

97 2.2 cl EGR - So after proding around I've located in my car. I disconnected the battery to reset the CEL then removed 3 bolt that holds the feul enjectors unit and a couple of hoses, not main gas line to it. Underneath that is a plate that needs to be remove. There you will find a boat load of carbon biuld up and your clogged ports. Clean it out and drive a couple hundred miles before emmission. mine just past and feels like it has more power.

While this may be true for 2.X CL - for anyone with a 3.0 this is not where the problem lays. Its a clogged EGR port IN the intake manifold its self. The only way to clean is by removing the entire intake manifold as outlined in the thread.

check engine light came on, Took to dealer, code p401 bad egr flow, 99 3.0cl 85000 miles not under warranty $580 to fix.

Even better, I was told the 2nd transmison is about to go with only 38,0000 miles. This is the second tranny.! To replace it will be $4200 no warranty.

Service manager said "just get rid off the car" we will give you 2 grand trade in.
