Need a winter SUV. I was looking at Grand Cherokees but I like the standard features of the MDX.

Trying to find something in the 03-06 range with 100K+ mileage. I assume basic things like timing belt service are important but are there any other MDX specific issues to look for?

Ive read the 03+ have a better transmission...any truth behind this? Many "ratings" have the 04+ as a more reliable vehicle.

Just looking for some basic thoughts, comments.

You are about in the same price range of the 07-08 RDX. The RDX will have the same or updated tech, RDX only slightly smaller in interior space, best bang for the buck sh-awd system for true 4 season driving from winter to summer, about the same mpgs if not better, and no where near the same issues with the 5AT like the early Acura models. You will still be looking at the same routine maint at +100,000 miles without adding age to the mix.

Unless you need the extra towing or 3rd row space. The ride for the RDX can be a little too sporty; but, I love the ride.

Thats a good recommendation and not something that I looked at.

It looks like it might take a little more searching to find a 07-08 RDX at $8k and under which is where I could find the MDX. I would prefer the newer turbo SUV as size isn't that big of a factory.

IMO, get an Acura with SH-AWD for winter duty. The 2007 transmission are rock solid, I've seen some for 10K with 150K miles.

The RDX is a great choice but they've had issues with oil consumption after 100K. Acura released a TSB with updated parts to fix the issue. I'd take the RDX over the 2003-2006 MDX any day of the week.

I highly recommend the 2004-2006 MDX if you have to get a first gen MDX.

Should I not look at an 2002 because of the tranny? Are the issues THAT common in a well maintained vehicle?

I'd avoid any acura made before 2004 with a 10 foot pole. The transmissions are glass and will fail. People have gone through 3-4 easily with those year MDX's and TL's.

2003 has the redesigned transmission. 2004-07 have the mid-gen updates like headlights, taillights, exhaust, etc. I have 180k on my '03. Still running strong and one of my favorite vehicles.

If it's truly a winter suv, tires are most important. Just because it's awd doesn't mean you're invincible. Save some coin and make sure each corner is wrapped properly. I loved running the rear corners down and sliding the rear during turns (think power slide, but less dramatic).

Our 2006 MDX has been bullet-proof. The 2006 has the zebra wood interior trim along with satin silver accents (in lieu of chrome). Another unique element for the 2006s was the inclusion of Onstar (agreement with GM in exchange for 3.5L V6s in the Saturn Vue). IMO the 2006 is the best of the 1Gs.

As far as the RDX goes, if you're talking a used car utilized in a colder climate, I would opt for the 3.5L V6 MDX over the 2.3L I-4 Turbo RDX hands down.

I personally never recommend a used vehicle with a turbo (esp with high miles)
